The hottest show band in the land, BIG CHEEKS dazzles judges, spectators, and other show bands at every performance. Each year, BIG CHEEKS aims for the sky and prides themselves on musicianship, commitment, showmanship, and fun. “Onward and upward, work hard, play hard” is our motto. Since its inception in 2008-09, Director Stefan Demetriadis and the awesome students of CHHS have gone from being that little instrumental afterthought behind the singers to become the hottest show band in the land.

Stefan A. Demetriadis – Director Biography
Stefan Demetriadis was born in Manchester, CT, and grew up in Virginia. He attended Falling Creek Middle School and Meadowbrook High School in Chesterfield County. He studied health education and music at East Carolina University and Virginia Commonwealth University. Stefan was bass trombonist in VCU’s acclaimed Jazz Orchestra I under the direction of Doug Richards. During and after his studies, he toured nationwide with Mojo/Universal recording artist The Ernies. The group received nationwide airplay, including a track on Universal’s movie “Basketball” and Sony Playstation’s “Tony Hawk Pro Skater.” After his tenure with The Ernies, he was invited to tour with Fighting Gravity (Mercury Records) before joining Bio Ritmo(Sony Triloka), an internationally acclaimed salsa band featured on salsa and ethnic compilations worldwide, while their self-titled 2004 release reached number 3 on the Italian World Music charts. In 2004, Bio Ritmo won the Independent Music World Series held in New York City.
From 1999-2004, he was bass trombonist in the highly regarded Devil’s Workshop Big Band receiving outstanding reviews in major music magazines including Downbeat and Relix. He decided to freelance after touring, performing with the Dorsey Big Band, and American Idol star William Hung. He has shared the stage with many notable performers such as Tower of Power, George Clinton and Parliament, Ozomatli, Aerosmith and the Wailers. In 2005, he performed in the musical “Urinetown” at Boston’s Lyric Stage Theater, receiving rave reviews from the Boston Globe. He has recorded in New York City, Washington, D.C., Nashville, and Los Angeles. His sound has been heard in Anchor Bay’s “Behind the Mask” and “RVD2”, a fan film by filmmakers at LucasArts, creators of the legendary Star Wars movies. In Spring of 2008, Stefan completed a studio recording with Gordy Haab/LucasArts on the Indiana Jones “Staff of Kings” video game soundtrack released on PlayStation 2 and Wii.
In May 2007, he was invited to represent Virginia’s talent and musical heritage at the Royal Welcome of Queen Elizabeth II of England at the Virginia State Capitol in Richmond, the first of many statewide events celebrating the 400th anniversary of the Jamestown settlement. Stefan recently completed a studio recording with Gordy Haab/LucasArts on the Indiana Jones “Staff of Kings” video game soundtrack released Spring 2008 on PlayStation 2 and Wii.
Stefan currently plays tuba/contrabass in the NoBS Brass Band, a collective of Richmond horn players that are mobile, fun, and funky, as in the New Orleans tradition and the Commonwealth Winds, a semi-professional wind ensemble, directed by Dr. Terry Austin(VCU). Side projects include a performance with Conjunto Season(salsa); Upper East Side Big Band and RVA Big Band(big band jazz); 804 Jazz Bones, VCU Trombone Choir, and Friends, and the Richmond Brass Consort(brass).
As a teacher, Stefan takes pride in introducing students to the world of music and encouraging them to excel beyond the school band room. One hundred percent of his lessons students who’ve applied to music schools have been admitted. His students continue to place in city, county, regional, and state music events. The entire trombone section of the 2007 Greater Richmond High School Jazz Band has worked with Stefan, as well as the first chair tenor trombonist in District III and first bass trombonists and euphoniums in Districts I and III. Stefan is very proud of recent student/high school graduate, All-Virginia’s top high school bass trombonist, Dillard Watt of Douglas Freeman High School(’07) who now plays with Stefan in No B.S. Brass!
Stefan serves currently as an assistant band director at Woodberry Forest School, instructing brass and directing the jazz ensemble. During marching band season, Stefan instructs low brasses at award-winning schools, Clover Hill High School and Cosby High School in Chesterfield, Douglas Freeman High School and Varina High School in Henrico. During the winter and spring, Stefan directs the show choir combo band at Clover Hill High School in Chesterfield and is happy to have earned the ‘Best Band/Combo’ award in every competition(14) between 2009-2012. In 2010, Stefan joined the music department at Lee-Davis High School in Hanover County, directing jazz band and show choir band combo. Stefan also serves as the low brass instructor to the students of Stonewall Jackson Middle School in Hanover County.
Aside from music, music, and more music, Stefan enjoys history, science, travel, basketball, classic autos, humor, and his friends and family.
